DTI believes in the transformative power and impact that well-educated, culturally competent, fierce birth professionals can have on birthing individuals and their families around the world.

DTI Doulas, DTI Childbirth Educators and The DTI Alliance exhibit the following:

First and foremost, they’re human rights advocates. They understand the current birth climate and acknowledge birth as a reproductive justice issue, affected by barriers based on race, class, religion, traditions and sexual orientation. We’ll preach and practice intersectional feminism until the identifier “intersectional” becomes unnecessary because yes, feminism is inclusive by definition but no, we’re not there yet. Our community offerings dip deep into historical and cultural context because it matters. Our scholarship programs for trans doulas and doulas of color exist because they need to.

They’re supporters, not saviors. Our doulas are present in the birthing room to meet the needs of their clients and facilitate meaningful conversations with the obstetrician and/or midwives, and nurses. They know their stuff, from birth options to the latest evidence-based research. But most importantly, they believe that the one giving birth is ultimately the decision-maker, which isn’t (or shouldn’t be) a controversial belief. Our practice is based on mutual trust – our doulas trust their clients to make their own informed choices, while clients trust our doulas to provide the unconditional care and support they need.

They practice and are skilled in our Slow Doula Method® . They have the tools necessary to navigate today’s birth climate and have a deep understanding of what it means to offer unconditional support. While the Slow Doula Method® was originally designed for doulas it is adaptable to all birth professionals and as such, all of DTI’s childbirth educators and The DTI Alliance are trained in SDM. DTI believes we all have the power to help shift the culture in a birthing room to meet the needs of clients and facilitate meaningful conversations with the obstetrician and/or midwives, and nurses. DTI birth professionals are playing a vital and central role in transforming maternity care.

They’re professional entrepreneurs. Being a birth professional means you’re a giver, that’s a given. But in the process of helping others, they build their own business dreams. Becoming an entrepreneur means the possibilities are endless. We have built into our curriculum business and marketing skills with advanced trainings so they emerge with confidence.

They are birth and postpartum experts. They have an incredible knowledge of the process of pregnancy, birth, labor and the postpartum period.  The benefits of support during and after childbirth are well known and well documented. Birth professionals have a positive impact on birth outcomes and are no longer a luxury, but a necessity. They are a specially trained healthcare provider, without clinical training, that understand the anatomy and physiology of birth, and the emotional and physical aspects of the postpartum and newborn period.

They’re modern-day healers. They have a wealth of knowledge and experience. They understand the ins and outs of physical, mental and spiritual health through the prenatal, birth, postpartum, and newborn periods. We encourage them to practice in an integrative and holistic way if they are certified through other healing modalities.

They are community-builders. We know we need each other  to thrive, especially since we’re still often misunderstood in the mainstream. But! No time for bitterness or self-pity. Our energy is focused on building one another up and fostering lasting relationships to advance the birth profession as a whole.
